2013 Blackpool Illuminations

August 28, 2013 at 12:22 pm
It’s that time of year again! The exciting switch on of the Blackpool Illuminations on Friday August 30th. The Blackpool Illuminations is the event of the year that makes Blackpool what it is. Did you know that the first place electricity lit up a town in England was Blackpool? That’s why every year since 1879 Blackpool has turned on this ‘artificial sunshine’ for the enjoyment of everyone staying in the town. It became such a popular event in the years to come, that 132 years later, the Blackpool Illuminations are one of the oldest and longest enduring traditions for a town in England. In 2013 there will be over one million lamps and five hundred displays themed and designed by lighting artisans from all over the world. Blackpool Illuminations are supported by over two hundred cable lengths, with forty platforms for switches! There are hundreds of poles which erect lights in all different directions, and for anyone studying the trade for electrician, this infrastructure aspect alone is of great interest. The switch on itself will be from celebrity TV presenter Jonathon Ross, and there are a host of popular bands to entertain you for the street party that follows the official turn on! While gazing at the beautiful lights of Blackpool Town Illuminations, you might consider you are looking at a display of lights that cost almost three million pounds to present. Admission to the six mile strip from Starr Gate to Bispham is absolutely free, and you will see this incredible street light display, and dashing electrified trams, whiz past you, alongside approximately four million visitors! If you’ve never seen the Blackpool Illuminations before, make sure you do! It truly is a feast for your eyes, and there’s plenty to do in Blackpool for entertainment too. If you are making a week of it, you could get to see the Illuminations before the official switch on part on August 30th, on the Tuesday 27th August. Ride the Lights is an annual event preceding the switch on, where the whole town of Blackpool and surrounding areas of Lancashire grab a bicycle and get to cycle the Illuminations route. With the lights on of course! There’s much merriment and mischief, with cyclers in fancy dress, and Blackpool Promenade street picnics and bands. The whole area is closed to traffic for Ride the Lights, which makes it even more enjoyable for everyone. Why not make a week of it and stay with us at the Carn Brae Hotel Blackpool . We are walking distance from Blackpool Town Centre, can help you with bike hire if you want to join Ride the Lights, and help you decide about other Blackpool attractions.
