Historic Tourism in Blackpool
When the elite crowd discovered Blackpool’s healing waters in the late part of the 19th century, they flocked to the small seaside hamlet to bathe. Blackpool became very popular as a holiday spot, due to its stunning wetland areas, game hunting opportunities and isolation from the mill towns within travel distance by coach.
The invention of the railway system increased Blackpool’s accessibility to those who could afford standard tickets. Blackpool became a haven for families who worked in those same industrial towns; Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield; and craved a slice of holiday life by the stunning shores of Blackpool beaches.
By 1896 the attraction of profits to be made from tourism saw much investment in Blackpool Bed and Breakfast accommodation, the building of The Blackpool Tower in classic Victorian style, and the magnificent Winter Gardens Complex. The Opera House is the largest in Britain outside of London and remains so to this day.
Blackpool’s tourism boom saw a unique culture developing, which values its Victorian roots and embraces modern technology. You can see this in the attention to transport restoration projects, in the wide array of trams available to travel on, which may have Victorian, Edwardian, or Georgian roots. Much of the early architecture is lovingly restored and protected, and you can see the history of this aspect of the town with a visit to the Blackpool Museum.
Modern life is embraced through the annual Illuminations, which celebrate electricity, decorations and Blackpool’s artistic vibe, as the town lights itself up for a significant part of the Autumn and Winter each year. The Pleasure Beach resort provides all manner of fun fair rides, both old and new, and the newest feature for the town is the Blackpool Tower skywalk, where you can see all the way to the North Shore and down to the South Shore.
Blackpool has variety in entertainment, with live music, cabaret and dancing spectaculars all regular events, available within close reach of the central promenade area. Blackpool Bed and Breakfasts offer a wide choice of accommodation, with something to suit everyone.
