Blackpool World Firework Championships
Each year in September the Tower Festival Headland lights up with the brilliant display of fireworks for the Blackpool World Firework Championships.
It is free to watch the display from the Blackpool Promenade, with all the action commencing from 7.30pm on Friday 6th September. Enjoy the fantastic atmosphere of live music set to night time firework displays from the world’s top pyrotechnic experts.
Four Fireworks Heats for Blackpool Promenade
A judging panel will decide between China, France, Ireland, and Britain, over a four week period of fierce firework competitions. After opening night, different categories of pyrotechnic displays grace the Blackpool Promenade on Friday 13th, 20th, and finish with a dazzling finale on Friday 27th September. This year’s World Fireworks Championships promises to be a scorcher of a display.
Guest Judge for World Fireworks Championships
This year, Visit Blackpool, the local tourism outfit hosting the championships has run a competition to have a local resident on the judging panel. Natalie Wyatt, of Marketing Blackpool, explains that because “the event is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people each year… we decided to have a guest judge.”
Fireworks will launch from the North Pier, and will include new and original fireworks that show crowds the spectacular element of pyrotechnic art.
World Fireworks Champions Expert in a Secretive Art Form
Firework-makers, or pyromancers, are notoriously secretive about their work, hiding themselves away for months, combining explosive powders, making canisters, and creating the inside parts of fireworks that set the sky ablaze and delight us all. The Blackpool World Fireworks Championships is the chance to be recognised as the best in the world, and that is why the competition is international.
Did you know that people who make fireworks in the UK have to be licensed? Most learn the art form through family tradition, and amateur enthusiasts are definitely not welcome. Firework making, and the tricks of the trade, are closely guarded secrets. The competitive aspects of the making of fireworks are extremely high.
