Blackpool Illuminations Switch on Weekend 2014
July 13, 2014 at 11:06 pm
At the end of August the annual Blackpool Illuminations Switch on Weekend lights up central Blackpool town to the delight of everyone. The pretty lights on display combine in a swirl of colour, shapes and styles to showcase the best of Blackpool's light artists and their latest creations. New this year - Headlights! The lights show costs millions to put on each year, and as part of a fundraising effort there will be a special display involving members of the public called 'Headlights'. If you'd like to see a colourised image of your head and shoulders on display with a special light effect you can purchase a spot in the Headlight Wall. The pictures will be displayed against the backdrop of the old Miners Home site and a focal point for the celebrations surrounding the switch on weekend. Trip the Lights - Tramtastic There will be special tram tours for the Blackpool Illuminations Switch on weekend inside trams lit up and decorated with lights. Special tour guides are on hand this year to give coaching parties an expert talk about the Illuminations over a six mile journey of wonderful light displays, the history of the illuminations and some interesting facts about Blackpool. Business Logolights To celebrate Blackpool's vibrant small business community businesses are being asked to sponsor a 'Logolights' spot - submitting a picture of their business logo - in a similar fashion to the Headlights-style wall display. With more than three million people visiting the Blackpool Illuminations each year, it gives businesses a chance to show off how proud they are to be based in Blackpool. The illuminations draw together the whole Blackpool community as a host of artists, electricians, scaffolders, joiners, painters, mechanics and engineers work throughout the year to put the show on. Around 65,000 hours of effort go into the Illuminations, which have been the subject of huge design concepts in lighting and visual effects. Over the last few years, high profile celebrities have performed the honour of the switch on, which officially heralds the start of the Illuminations. These include Robbie Williams, Keith Lemon, Tem GB gymnasts Beth Tweddle and Max Whitlock and Jonathan Ross in 2013. Note that this year you must apply for a wristband before the event in order to be able to attend the live switch on ceremony and enjoy the live bands performing on the day. There are plenty of wonderful places to see and stay in Blackpool for the weekend beginning August 29th. Why not stay with us at the Carn Brae Hotel in central Blackpool and make a weekend of it!
