Blackpool Airport operates Heli2000, which is a flying school where you can learn to fly a helicopter after one lesson. If you are looking for that perfect gift, or surprise day out while in Blackpool, there is no experience equal to taking off up into the skies, and flying a helicopter.
Two types of helicopter are available, the R22, which is more lightweight, and the heavier and noisier R44. The R22 is a two-bladed, piston engine helicopter, with two seats. Over four thousand of these helicopters have been built. The R44 has two-blades, and is faster than the R22, due to increased engine capacity, hydraulic flight controls and fuel injection. This helicopter can seat four people during the flight, so you can go along with the trainee pilot if you dare.

There are two options for lessons, a 30 minute or 60 minute flight. All are done with instruction on ground, you fly with an instructor, and the goal of the lessons is to make someone feel comfortable flying, and experience as little apprehension as possible.
After you have been cleared for take-off from the Blackpool airport you will see Squires Gate Lane swirling below, and will head out along it towards the Blackpool Promenade. From here you will be able to see the Irish Sea, and the newly designed Promenade landscaping and large art sculptures from a birds-eye-view. The huge mirror-ball may not look so big from up in the skies.
Coming up from the southern end, the next sighting is the Blackpool Pleasure Beach resort, and the view of the sky-high rides, and the people riding them is fantastic. Your flight instructor will then bring you over the three piers. The South, Central and North Piers will look much closer together from the air, and it is great to see the ferris wheels, and truly appreciate how far they reach into the sea-beds.
You will then fly to the Blackpool Tower, and the height of it will be almost the same as you are in the air so you mustn’t crash into it! You can glimpse the Winter Gardens and Blackpool’s busiest area from the skies, before heading back over the River Wey and to the Blackpool Airport base.
Heli2000 is the place to go if you want to experience major thrills, as you fly your very first helicopter, over Blackpool’s famous leisure resort.
