Ride The Lights 2014
July 13, 2014 at 11:08 pm
On August 26th cyclists have the opportunity to attend a pre-show event, the annual Ride The Lights. Each year, the famous Blackpool Illuminations are switched on in central Blackpool, comprising a six mile strip display along the Promenade and central piers. Free and Fun for all the Family The nice thing about Ride the Lights is that it's free and open to all, and is most certainly NOT a bike 'race'. You can go as fast or slow as you like, and this is a very family friendly event for people of all ages. Charity groups and friends often dress up in costumes, making the Ride the Lights event a fun, visual spectacle. It can also be hilarious to see what costumes people come up with each year. Between 7 and 10 pm on Tuesday 26th of August, the Blackpool Illuminations lights are switched on as a test run and preview for the main event that weekend. Ride the Lights has been held every year since 2006 and has proven enormously popular with locals and visitors alike. It is the best way to get a sneaky peak at Blackpool’s most famous light festival. Cyclist Guidelines The cycle route is approximately six miles long and commences at the Golden Mile, via South Shore. From Bispham, you can join or leave at any point along the route if you want to stop and look at something. Many people stop off and picnic at the Promenade, watching the many cyclists go past them against the backdrop of the stunning Illuminations. You do need to register in advance if you want to join in the fun of Ride the Lights. There's a few rules about the standard your bike must meet, including a working light on the front and a red light at the rear. Most people add a few flashing lights of their own to create an individual light display on their bikes. Trams will still be running, with area marshalls on hand to guide you and your group through the route. Other vehicles won't be on the road with you, just a lot of other cyclists joining in the fun.
